Another ambitious project that has recently been proposed by the city of Dubai is destined to change tourism industry in the emirate. It is a huge desert resort being established on the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai.

The project is the most recent attempt by Dubai to offer its diverse tourist product portfolio beyond the city and beach tourism by developing a global nature, leisure, cultural, and sustainability-based desert tourism.

A Visionary Desert Destination

Desert Destination

Al Layan Oasis will be a massive eco-tourism project in the Al Marmoom desert region, located about 50 minutes from the Dubai city centre. It is also strategically situated that it can be reached by both the locals and foreign tourists who are willing to experience the beauty of the desert without having to drive a long distances beyond the comforts of the city.

The oasis will have a total area of about 10 million square feet. It is aimed at converging nature with innovation by offering a mixture of landscaped spaces with relaxation and recreation.

The central lake of 2.5 million square feet in the middle of the project will feature a great contrast with the rest of the dunes. This massive water area will act as the centre of various attractions, including passive relaxation and water sports. The lake is surrounded by walking and cycling paths, camping facilities, cultural reserves and family-friendly facilities. They all combine to provide visitors with a desert tourism platform that can never be matched elsewhere in the region.

Alignment with Dubai’s Strategic Vision

Al Layan Oasis is not an isolated project but a major element of various strategic plans that form the future of Dubai. One of the closest ones is the Blue and Green Roadmap 2030, introduced by Dubai Municipality. Its purpose was to increase the use of the outdoors and invest in nature as one of the many elements of a broader promise to wellbeing.

Other plans that are supported by the oasis include the Dubai Countryside and Rural Areas Development Plan, the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. When combined, these frameworks are focused on the attainment of the balance between sustainability, accessibility, and quality of life. They also make the oasis their tourist attraction and a nature-based vacation.

Infrastructure and Visitor Facilities

Al Layan Oasis will have an infrastructure that will support high numbers of visitors without interfering with the operations. The facility will have 1000 parking spaces and a combination of facilities to handle the rush traffic of tourists effectively. The extent of this planning is based on the anticipation that the oasis would attract approximately 330,000 tourists a year. It will also appeal to locals who might want to have a weekend outing, along with tourists seeking exotic desert experiences.

Among the main attractions of the oasis is a massive web of 14 kilometres of walking and biking paths. Some of these paths have 4 kilometres of raised walkways that are 5 metres above the ground. These roads will serve as the panoramic sight of the main lake, the landscape of the oasis and the desert landscape.

In addition, they offer many vantage points to the visitor and allow them to become immersed in the surroundings. The tracks can also be connected to the prevailing tracks in the Al Marmoom area as a way of expanding the outdoor recreational facilities in Dubai.

The Four Zones of Al Layan Oasis

The project is structured into four different zones to provide a unified but diverse experience, with each area having different attractions and facilities:

1. The Gathering Oasis

The Gathering Oasis will be a social and cultural centre that consists of an open-air cinema and an amphitheatre to hold performances and events. Furthermore, there will be plazas where food trucks will be available, where people can taste different cuisines in the open air of the desert. The area will be an active meeting place of all ages through social events, movies and community get-togethers.

2. The Family Oasis

The Family Oasis is centred on comfort and convenience, offering 28 rest spaces, play areas for children, and family-friendly amenities. They are aimed at making sure that parents and kids have more time together in nature. This neighbourhood is all about accessibility and relaxation, and it accommodates families of any size.

3. The Camping Oasis

Camping Oasis will host approximately 100 caravans and provide a visitor centre which will remind and educate visitors about the environment. This area is aware of the increasing popularity of outdoor activities and caravan tourism, which gives the opportunity to make the desert experience complete, sleeping under the stars.

4. The Recreation Oasis

The Recreation Oasis is a combination of recreational amenities, retail business and visitor services in a sustainable natural environment. By integrating amenities and recreational spaces, this space ensures that the tourists will not fail to get a chance to enjoy both formal and informal activities in the oasis.

Environmental Sustainability at the Core

The Al Layan Oasis project is largely anchored on environmental stewardship. The design reflects the desire to conserve the natural systems and establish infrastructure that enables the visitors to enjoy the desert landscape without abusing the environment. The growth of native planting helps in the enhancement of local biodiversity. It also helps in the provision of shady spots to enhance the comfort of the visitors in the desert sun.

The artificial lake is supposed to form a microclimate, which will moderate the temperatures and bring birds and other wildlife to the oasis. It will contribute to the ecological nature of the oasis. The oasis can be used as a template for eco-tourism development, since it balances the development and preservation of the natural environment of the desert.

Tourism, Economic Impact and Investment

Tourism

Al Layan Oasis will contribute greatly to the Dubai tourism sector. The destination is expected to complement the list of attractions in the emirate, given the estimated 330,000 visitations per year. Its natural environment is unique. The different leisure and recreational activities make it attractive to different categories of visitors such as nature lovers, adventure seekers, families and those with an interest in culture.

Besides visitor attraction, the project presents huge opportunities in terms of involvement in the project by the private sector. The oasis has been allocated an area of about 365,000 square metres to be invested in. It will offer room to businesses to set up services and other amenities, which are in line with the vision of the destination.

The given model of collaboration between the state and businesses helps to improve commercial activities. At the same time, it will make sure that the development process is also related to the sustainability of the project.

Al Layan Oasis and Dubai’s Desert Network

Al Layan Oasis is part of the expanding chain of artificial desert sanctuaries in Dubai that are similar to the previous projects, like the Al Qudra Lakes area of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve.

The current complex of oasis, just approximately 40 minutes away from the central city of Dubai, is already drawing in tourists with their cycling paths, enclosed lakes, glamping, and a wide range of wild animals.

By turning Al Layan Oasis into a part of the developing ecosystem, Dubai supports its desire to preserve the natural landscapes and make them available and attractive to tourists.

Closing In

Al Layan Oasis is a new chapter in the history of tourism in Dubai. Through the integration of ecology, leisure, culture, and innovative design, the project will offer a desert experience to people of all ages that has never been experienced anywhere before.

It can become a character destination of the tourism ecosystem of the emirate, which is strategically aligned to long-term urban and environmental plans, a world-class infrastructure, and sustainability.

With the ongoing work on this innovative project of developing the desert, Dubai keeps demonstrating its capabilities of turning overly bold ideas into the top travel experiences in the world.
